My name is Etienne and I am a 27 year-old college student and father of a beautiful 5 year-old son.  I am studying to become a journalist.

My hobbies include real time strategy games such as StarCraft, Warcraft and War Hammer.  I am working on learning the guitar (slowly, but steadily) and I enjoy assembling computers- especially while sipping from a good glass of wine.

My fondness of literature and writing first began to blossom when I was in elementary school and Reading Is Fundamental Began (RIF).  My family could not afford to purchase many books for us, so this was a way for me to truly own a book that I could read over and over again.

At first, I enjoyed the Bernstein Bears.  Later I had the opportunity of reading an abridged version of Frankenstein.   I was so  proud of myself for reading it all the way through in one sitting, especially since it was 100 pages long.

In the third grade, I came across a new type of book whose titles were Which Way Books and Choose Your Own Adventure.  In a sense, this is where my fondness of role-playing began.

One day, in the sixth grade, I was in detention.  The teacher on duty asked me to do my homework, but I had already finished it in class and told the teacher so.  Then, this very kind and caring man changed my life.  He gave me a book to start reading.  it was called Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.  Even though I liked to read, I was slow at it.  It took me 30 minutes to read just 8 pages.  The teacher told me to take it home and read some more.  I eagerly did so.  The teacher allowed me to keep it until I finished it.  It took me three and a half months to finish, but I did it.

After Ender’s Game, I began reading fantasy books as well.  I began with the Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander.  After that, I found a delightful series written by two female authors whose names are Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.  It was called the Dragon Lance Chronicles.  I will always be thankful of those two brilliant ladies for their writing styles which was instrumental in helping me to consider the perspectives of others.

I would like to someday soon become a bona fide author and  hopefully  help  a child  see the world in a new light- help someone be able to view life from a new and fantastic perspective.  Right now, I want to work as a journalist so that I can inform people of what is going on in our world, so that it wonderful attributes will be preserved.  I want my son and other children to have the time and freedom to appreciate our world and explore it further.

Thank you Eric, Susan, Celeste, Sheri and Cassie for being teachers who spent time and effort investing in me.  I will try hard to pay it forward.
